The Future of Flooring

When I replaced the flooring in my home recently, I was surprised to find out that one of the options available to me was a cork floor. I’d always thought of cork as nothing more than the way to top off a bottle of wine. However, it turns out that cork is a great flooring option. It has many of the benefits of hardwood, but the texture and give of the material also adds some of the benefits of carpeting. I decided to start a blog about flooring so that I could share some of the benefits of interesting and lesser-known flooring options. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you only have a few choices. There are lots of great directions you can take with your home flooring that will perfectly suit your home and your needs.

How Home Automation Can Help You Entertain In Style

When you think of the various professionals who impact your ability to entertain guests, don't forget to put your residential electrician on the list -- because this technician can hook you up with home automation that turns your residence into an event center. A single-room or whole-house automation setup gives you more control over the environment while freeing you to act as master of ceremonies. Here are just a few ways home automation can help you entertain in style.

Home Theater Heaven

One of the most helpful applications for home automation is home theater operation. If showing a movie at home means a little more to you and your guests than merely turning on the TV, then you may have decided to create your very own screening room, complete with luxurious chairs, cinematic decor, and of course a state-of-the-art projector, screen and sound system. But there's something decidedly non-glamorous about having to mess with a dozen different switches and remote control devices to evoke your movie-night magic.

A home automation system in your movie room allows you to control every aspect of the environment with minimal effort. This is especially important if you're using a front projector. These devices give you the most cinematic home viewing experience possible -- but only if you can maintain precise control over the ambient light in the room. Automated window shades let you start the show right on time without worrying about light spilling onto the screen. In fact, you can program your automated system to fire up the projector, lower your motorized screen, and adjust your light levels all at the same time.

Delighting Your Dinner Guests

Dinner parties can be elegant, festive or romantic -- but creating and maintaining the right atmosphere can be tricky when you're also trying to play host and see to everyone's needs. Before you know it, the room has gotten intolerably stuffy, the lighting is all wrong for that particular stage of the evening, or the stereo has become inaudible underneath the conversations of your growing crowd. To control all these variables while fulfilling your host duties properly, you'd need an extra pair of hands or even a team of servants -- unless you've got home automation doing some of the work for you.

Controlling the mood of any room, including the dining room, is a snap with the right home automation options at your command. If you have wall panels in each room, you can alter the lighting, temperature and audio volume at the touch of a button. But you can also carry that "button" around with you, in the form of a remote control unit or mobile device app, granting you precise control over multiple rooms from wherever you happen to be -- even if it's in the kitchen, chopping vegetables.

Creating a Seasonal Party Palace

Certain seasons and holidays naturally lend themselves to parties dominated by special lighting, mood music and other environmental bells and whistles. For instance, what's a Halloween without dramatic lighting effects and spooky sounds, or Christmas without festive lights and evocative music? If you're the type of person who likes to go all out in your holiday parties and events, then have your residential electrician install home automation to make those festivities both more festive and easier to control.

Sometimes the most dramatic enhancements to your party are taking place not inside your home, but outdoors. Make sure your guests can fully appreciate those sights! For instance, there's no point in stringing up an elaborate lighting display in your yard if you keep forgetting to switch it on in the evening -- and if you leave it on all the time, the resulting electric bill may dampen your holiday cheer. Connect that display to a daylight-activated sensor, and you'll always be putting on the best show in town at times when it can actually be seen. Even your windows can get into the act -- after all, you wouldn't want your Christmas party guests to miss that sudden, unexpected snowfall! Automation lets you raise all those heavy windows shades simultaneously for a spectacular view.

As you can see, home automation can make your home the most exciting spot in town for parties, movie nights and other events. Ask your residential electrician about different component, control and installation options -- and then have a great time!
